The BIRDS in the NEST in the FERN from the PORCH in the GARAGE...
Friday night was a crazy night. After work (which is always crazy), I made a quick dinner, and then Asher saw his friend outside playing, so Matt and I let him play next door. While outside, the sky got cloudier and cloudier. The weather had mentioned a thunderstorm "might pop-up," but considering how the weather has been so wrong lately, I was really surprised about this.
Let's back up, actually. Friday morning, I was asked to be part of a meeting at the community college about micro. On the way there, there was a warning that the ozone was dangerous and why wasn't I carpooling. That explained the haze and the burning eyes. Not to mention, there is also a forest fire in the mountains that was burning my eyes. Special.
So, after a long week, and a long drive, and the hottest day we have had all year, I will be honest, I was a little relieved to see the clouds. Then, at about 8:30, the wind chime was making the loudest strains I have heard it make and I thought about one thing:
The baby birds in the nest in the fern that Katy gave me. I went out, and the wind was insane, my hair was blowing around like Medusa's and I could not see. Valerie was freaking out, Asher was screaming, and I got the fern down from its place on the porch.
I brought it in and sure enough, momma was sitting on the nest. She just looked at me, and sat perfectly still. Until Asher started screaming. I decided to take the fern into the garage just for this reason, and momma flipped out and started flying around- she bumped into the ceiling twice and I thought for sure, she was going to break a wing and leave behind four brand new naked birdlets. We got Asher into the house, and the momma perched on one of the racks for our garage door. Matt and I opened the windows (and the blinds got sucked outside), it was super hot in there. Three hours later, the storm was past, and I hung the fern back outside, and we opened the garage door. Momma still perched on the rack. I knew she would probably stay there until the sun came up. Sure enough, early this morning, I went outside, and she was sitting back on her nest with her babies.
There are branches and trees down most every place.
We saw roofs ripped off, collapsed buildings, and even a few houses down, all the gutters were ripped off, and left hanging, on a house on our block. We are so lucky. That storm was terrifying. Lighting, thunder, and crazy wind, but barely any rain. We still need rain.
When my children remember me, I hope they remember, I am the kind of mom who rescues a bird family from a storm. I did a good thing.
