Matt's Birthday

Ya know... Matt's birthday is actually probably THE MOST inconvenient day to have a birthday ever.

December 26- after alllll the Christmas prep, early morning, late night, and the holiday mode in full force, it is really hard to then get it all together for a really meaningful birthday celebration the next day.

I try every year though, to make Matt feel loved, appreciated and acknowledged.  This year, we had the missionaries over, and I made a really yummy meal.

Organic sugar-glazed ham, potatoes au gratin, wild rice and corn casserole, fresh bread, stuffing, salad, sparking juice and a really delicious cake.  I also got Matt some german chocolates I know he likes.

I hope that he knows how loved and appreciated he is.  I know that Matt works so much harder at everything than most people.  Sometimes, it seems like no one even notices that, but being his wife for five years, I definitely have taken note of this.

He is kind and steady.  He never allows his faith to waver.  He loves me and Valerie and Asher more than anyone else has ever, and maybe even, will ever.

I suppose that the hard thing is to always remember these things above all else.

Blowing out the birthday candles (note very sleepy Asher on Matt's lap).

Matt is really not a fan of the "skip around the room" thing as per family tradition in his family.  He thinks people like to just laugh at him, but he was asked to do it again this year after telling me the night before he really hoped he did not get asked to do it again.  Soooooo, I suggested he do it one last time and make a statement that he hates it.  He definitely does not ever, ever want to do this for anyone's amusement again.  Sigh.  I think this one runs deep and I don't even understand the whole "skip around the room thing..."  Something to work out in therapy, I suppose ;-)

What do you mean one last time? He just set the skip-around-the-room bar so much higher than it has ever been. Now the rest of us have to elevate our next skip-around-the-room to match his. As far as I'm concerned, Matt is the current skip-around-the-room world champion.

Colin, I actually totally agree. It's ok to be the focus of revelry- just own it. He owned it. I think (hope) that was a good lesson. We will see in about 362 days, eh?

Skipping around the room makes me feel like the court jester (that's the reason I was wearing that hat).
It feels like the whole point of it is to point and laugh at me. I do dread the possibility that someone will ask me to do it on my birthday. it wouldn't feel like this if it were done by other people. The only other time I have seen anyone else do it was when we were at Colin and Lori's for Thanksgiving in Blacksburg. It was dad's birthday and he was the only other person I've seen do it.
