During college, I remember walking by a friend of mine in the middle of the week clearly packing up her car and I was like "Where are you going?" Thinking... surely she isn't skipping three days of class and she said, " I need a few mental-health days."
That is a fancy way of ditching, pretty much. Anyway, I felt like Valerie and I needed a mental health day. I have been RUNNING RAGGED these last couple weeks with teaching, writing exams, giving exams, grading exams, grading final papers, AND all the "mom" stuff. Then yesterday, a headline popped up on my screen.
about a Lacrosse player's murder at UVa. And I was like NO WAY.
I nannied for the womens' lacrosse coach a couple years ago and we became very close to her family. She even took Valerie to a very expensive LaX camp for free. So anyway, I read the story and stood up as soon as I read the victim's name. Yeardley Love. That is a pretty rare name, one I knew and I woke up Valerie (because I was not thinking clearly). Yeardley had taken Valerie under her wing when Valerie was at Lacrosse camp. I also remember her being the coach's daughter's favorites and of course, her number. Number 1 was the one Kelsey sported as well on her backpacks, etc.
Anyway, it really has been messing with my already-overwhelmed mind.
Today we drove to Charlottesville for some cupcakes. Ironically, a press-conference was happening right outside the police station... right next to the cupcake store... I guess about the condition they found her in... which is pretty terrifying. Anyway. It really puts a perspective on things. I feel so sad for her family and her friends and for her coach who loved her.
The curly baby.

crystal, this is so tragic. as i have read accounts online and looked at photos of yeardley, it is difficult to believe that one human can be so violent with another. i know it is everywhere, but it is still so sad. sad doesn't really even touch it. i'm glad you took a mental health day.
